Life Through Our Eyes: An Eye-Opening Experience
With
The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio
Program Goal:
The goal of our community-based program is to gain awareness and provide education to external supports on the physical, social, and psychological perspectives of living with low vision to bridge understanding and empathy between sighted individuals and people living with low vision and foster caregiver self-efficacy.

Program Outcome
With another OT student, an occupation-based educational work-shop program was created for external supports of individuals living with low vision at the Sight Center of NWO. This development consisted of conducting a needs assessment, reviewing the literature, interviewing key stakeholders, creating a budget, marketing the program, developing the program, and evaluating the participants and the program overall.
After talking to key stakeholders, a bridge in the educational understanding of the perspective and self-efficacy in providing external support to individuals with low vision was identified. This program was developed to help bridge understanding and empathy between sighted individuals and people living with low vision and foster caregiver self-efficacy. The program consisted of 3 workshops, occurring on a once-month basis. Each workshop is designed to target one of the three specified domains: physical, social, and psychological perspectives of living with low vision.
In addition, we created a website so that program workshop presentations, materials, and resources can be accessible online.
